by Deb Baskin

Work is nearing completion at the South End of Willoughby Lake, following a state and federal investment of more than $1.5 million to improve this treasured and sought-after area. The overall South End project has focused on better parking, safer pedestrian circulation, improved lake access, and protection of the surrounding natural resources. Changes include the addition of an overflow parking lot on the west side of Route 5A, as well as several other smaller parking areas closer to the beaches and South End trails. Other significant upgrades include new and improved trails, boardwalks, and pedestrian paths, making it easier and safer to move through the area and reach the lake. Accessibility has been a priority, with approachable routes, an ADA-accessible dock, and improved lake and paddle-craft access.  Local engineers and landscape architects brought creativity and thoughtful planning to this impressive improvements project, developing innovative water and landscape management measures that will help protect Willoughby Lake, improve water quality, and preserve its beautiful shoreline for generations to come.
